R3 Project_01 | no.2 design

no.2 product design constructs and designs 100% biodegradable furniture made from pressed cow manure. no.2 facilitates the collaboration between local farmer’s desire and innovation to offset the environmental effects of their farms and the designer’s creative drive to push the boundaries of what constitutes furniture design. This process yields a cradle to cradle solution for managing waste, powering neighborhoods and essentially manufacturing designed furniture that can ultimately fertilize your garden when disposed of. Project_01 is a collection of the exploration and research of this concept into a bound, hardcover book.

R3 Project_02 | no.2 design [ revisited ]

For the people that were around me while I was developing this concept, it was something, that I believe, grew on them. For people that would see this product for the first time without really knowing the attractive specifications of the product, I was worried that they would be put off by it at first, and indeed, there were a few critics from outside the class that were worried about the product looking too much like "cow poo". :o)

I realized that there could be things I could change, like the color of the newly pressed furniture, such as the revision below. In the end, it was a risky topic from an esthetic point of view that I was wiling to take and I am proud of the exploration over all.

Ink Recycling Program

Rika and I have been trying to put together a Ink Recycling Program for the Graphic
Design Department. We finally got approval on design and implementation. Here is
the poster I designed to advertise. Hope the program catches on.

Urban Forest Project

The Urban Forest Project is a series of unprecedented outdoor banner exhibitions taking root
in cities around the world. In each location, artists, designers, students and the general public will employ the idea or form of the tree to make a powerful visual statement on banners that will be displayed throughout the community.

Our Print Class is submitting designs for banners that will be posted within San Francisco.
The first poster below is the poster I ended up submitting, the other two were experimental.

The idea behind the visuals was influenced by current issues surrounding health care in America. I wanted to make a connection between how healthy trees are for us and how really, they are our free health care. I believe the more trees people are around, the healthier they will be. So I used the first aid symbol with a few branches sprouting from
it to create a quick connection between trees and health / aid.

Burt's Bees | Logo Redesign & Promotion

For my Print 3 class with Roland Young, I chose to work with the Burt's Bees brand.
I redesigned their logo and created a newspaper sized brochure and a poster series
of 3. My initial idea was to focus on a more serious perspective based around the
issues of Colony Collapse Disorder. The concept slowly evolved into a more simple
direction focusing on what it is that bees are so important for. The answer was,
they're sex for flowers, hence the headline. Without this promiscuous relationship,
a third of the food we love and the flowers we adore would not exist. The heart shape represents this 100,000,000 year old love affair and is actually based off of
the natural shape of a bees face. I hope this explains all the bees pics I posted,
research is fun sometimes!

Casa del Patron | Housewares Line

The focus of this assignment was to choose a brand name that you wouldn't associate
with a housewares line and create a housewares line around that brand. I chose to
work with Patron Tequila and created a sub brand,"Casa del Patron". The whole line's
esthetic is based around a lime green color, similar to the color of Patron packaging.
Each item had a headline that referenced specific bar lingo that related to each
items function in a unique way. The line is also bilingual, having both English and
Spanish content.

ANDO Desk Clock

Tadao Ando's architecture has an extraordinarily universal appeal. Using
little more than concrete, glass, and wood, he manages to incorporate the
ineffable forces of nature like sunlight, wind, and water into his designs. I
designed this clock for my packaging class based around  his minimal and
majestic design. I really enjoyed this project because it gave me a chance
to finally learn more about one of my favorite architects.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival | Event Logo

This is my attempt at the event identity for the New Orleans Jazz and
Heritage Festival. I have to say, I wish I didn't get this assignment during
a summer class. I am definitely going to be spending some additional
time refining. This was a fun project though. I finally let myself design
a little more organically.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival | Event Poster

This is the poster I designed for the event. I wanted to create a vibrant and
vibrating, colorful and organic feeling with the hand drawn trumpet and
sound waves. I really wanted to update the look while maintaining a traditional
symbol of jazz, the trumpet among other instruments. Overall, I wanted the
composition to really evoke an uplifting , inviting, and iconic feel.

TED Conference Brochure | 6 Ways Mushrooms Can Help Save The Earth

I would have to say this has been my most favorite and rewarding assignment. For this assignment I was to research a TED video clip and create a promotional package comprised of a brochure, posters, and mailer. I came across the video "How Mushrooms Can Help Save the Earth", by Paul Stamets and was hooked by the message immediately. I would definitely suggest checking out the video on the TED website. Trust me, you will never look at mushrooms the same way again!

If anything, I think this assignment has really opened my eyes to a direction in design I never considered. I would love to work more with translating relevant topics in science into something that is artistic and visually engaging.

I love thinking about the potential power art and science as a team may possess and it has really made me think hard about what I want to contribute to society as a designer. I know I couldn't have made it as a biologist or chemist, but maybe I could play the part of a visual messenger.
